Ideal body weight (IBW) is the weight considered optimal for good health based on height and gender. Unlike BMI which gives a range, IBW formulas give a single target weight. Different formulas give slightly different results — the range across all formulas is a reliable target zone.
Research shows that Indians tend to carry more body fat and visceral fat at the same BMI compared to Western populations. The World Health Organization recommends lower BMI cut-offs for Asians — overweight starts at BMI 23 (vs 25 for Western populations) and obese at BMI 27.5 (vs 30). This means the ideal weight range for Indians is slightly lower than standard Western charts.
